Want to know more about Steve, our Managing Director?

Here is a small slice of what it’s like to be Steve the Managing Director of the Oxygen Agency

Steve is the managing director here at the Oxygen Agency. We are a full-service marketing communications business that started out in 2002 in Tiverton. We have experienced the remarkable growth of the region over the years and enjoy working in the hotbed of creativity that Devon now offers.

Steve says the best thing about his job is… “I’ve been a trained journalist and copywriter since 1994 and in my role as managing director I tend to get plenty of varied copywriting roles. From tweets and blogs to press releases and websites, I’m always keeping my hand in. And sometimes these projects can be very interesting. For example, at Oxygen I’ve developed the brand name for a Middle Eastern chewing gum, written sleeve notes for a Cliff Richard album, written a book for a talking Postman Pat toy, and written a speech for the late Sir David Frost. Not many people can make those claims to fame!”

And the thing he likes best about working in Devon is… “There’s much more to Devon than tourism and food, which is what people immediately think of. We have a broad variety of manufacturing clients and there is a wealth of technical and innovation skills in the region.”

Steve’s tells us his favourite place for coffee/dinner… “I was hugely impressed by the Abode café, bar and grill, where we enjoyed tapas at a corporate event with Exeter City FC. It may be the food, or perhaps I was just pleased to catch up with Paul Tisdale, who I’ve known since we were kids.”

The best advice he ever received was… “‘Your first sight is always the best.’ This came to me via a sporting pastime, and I think it’s true. It’s basically saying, trust your first instinct because for the most part it will be the right instinct.”

The worst career decision he ever made… “I started my business career as a management accountant, and while I worked with some great companies including Marconi and IBM, I can honestly say I hated every minute of my job. I am now in a career where creativity is at the heart of everything we do, and I can honestly say I’ve looked forward to coming to work every day for 20 years.”

Steve recommends… “‘Not Going Out’. It’s a comedy series featuring Lee Mack which has recently come to an end. It has to be the best situation comedy on TV, and now is the time to buy the box sets and enjoy all the series from the last seven years.”

If Steve had a motto, it would be… “‘Semper paratus’. It was my school motto, which means ‘always prepared’. In business we provide a full marketing service, which means we’re capable of supporting our clients whatever they throw at us.”

Steve leaves us with some advice to a business looking to develop an online presence… “If you’re creating your first website then firstly, think about who your customers are and what they need to know, and make sure they can find that information quickly and easily. Secondly, think about what those customers would key into a search engine if they were trying to find you. The best way to do this is ask people to do a search – and write the phrases down.”

Contact Steve to discuss any future projects you may have, and he will be able to tell you how Oxygen can help
