Last week we were joined by Sarah-Jane Turner, a Geography graduate who is working in marketing and was keen to experience agency life. She spent a week with us here at Oxygen working on a variety of projects.
Having graduated from university with a Geography degree last summer, and with no idea what to do next, I decided on getting as much work experience as I could in a variety of different areas. A few months later I found myself enjoying working in a marketing role, and wanted to find out more about the marketing industry.
Oxygen was an agency I had heard of previously, so I thought that it would be great to get a new view on the marketing industry and agency life in general, and I was looking forward to spending a week in the office.
One of the first tasks I was given was writing a blog on the rise of video. Writing blogs is something I have done before, but this blog required quite a different tone of voice to what I am used to. I found it really interesting to discover how video represents such a large and growing proportion of internet traffic.
Press releases needed a completely different tone of voice. I hadn’t written a press release before, but I learnt that it often involves gleaning several sentences of copy from very little information!
Working through several video clips of footage to pick out useful themes was another job that I found interesting – the clips were all about the work Oxygen does as an agency, from creative work to marketing and PR. It was a great way for me to learn more about the agency and how it works, and at the same time pick out key themes and quotes for future use over various platforms.
One of the most interesting things I learnt in my week at Oxygen was how to use Photoshop. I’d never used it before, and I had never really been any good at design or art, but once I had spent some time figuring out what to do, I began to edit some images and created a new image to go with the blog post I had written earlier, as well as some images to put into an email I was creating.
Spending the week at Oxygen was a really good way to learn more about the marketing and communications industry, and the variety of work that is done within an agency, from marketing and PR to the web developing and design. I really enjoyed the variety of jobs, everyone was nice and helpful, and it was really good to be given real work that needed to be done, so that I could learn on the job instead of just watching people work all week!
