How to save time creating quality web content that gets you noticed

Creating the kind of quality web content that gets visitors to your site and tweeting about you has become essential for every kind of business. But creating good content takes time. Here are Oxygen’s short-cut tips to getting there faster.

How to define quality content – know what your target audience wants and give them that information.

Do you have breaking news, or an expert opinion? Can you make a comparison, review a product, write a mini guide, outline a strategy or provide an oversight that will make their life easier? Be someone whose thoughts and information your audience values, and they’ll return to your site again and again, because that’s what they consider good quality content.

Gather your keywords.

Your audience needs to find you easily. So jot down a list of at least half a dozen keywords that anyone would type into a search engine to find the information you’re posting. Doing this first makes writing keyword-rich quality content so much easier.

Write your headline first, using as many keywords as you can.

Your headline is the only thing the majority of surfers will read. So make it catchy and make sure it ‘does what it says on the tin’, to draw interested readers in. Play around with it, and write a dozen if you’ve time. You’ll almost certainly come up with something better than your first attempt.

Write your subheads second.

Subheads don’t just orientate the reader. They can also be goalposts that help you along as you write. A subhead stops you rambling off on some obscure point, and reminds you that you only have a few sentences to go before you should be covering the next one. They also help to make sure you cover the subject in a logical way. They’re the ‘bones’ on which you’ll flesh out your main body copy.And they raise the quality of your writing.

Write your call to action next.

Don’t forget to remind the reader of what you’re selling. Relate what you’ve been writing about to your call to action to make for a smoother transition.

Write your title tag, meta description and meta keywords.

It isn’t just well-written, keyword filled content that will get you noticed. Search engines respond better to title tags, meta descriptions and meta keywords that are accurate, specific and distinctive to each page on your site. Skip this step and you’ve just thrown away half the advantage of posting new content.

Fill in the content under your headline and subheads.

Second to last comes the ‘writerly’ bit. You know who you’re addressing and what they want to know. You know which points you’ll make in which order, and how many words or sentences it’ll take you to get there. All you have to do is get there with a little style. Read through your list of keywords so that they’re on the tip of your tongue and you’ll fit them in effortlessly as you go. If you start with all these steps as outlined in order instead of just writing, you’ll won’t be working in the dark. However, skip the planning and you may not find the best route to the best kind of post, and it’ll certainly take longer. However, map things out, and even your rebellious subconscious mind will play along, because you’ve given it a clear instruction.

Don’t forget to proofread.

The fastest way to do this is to walk away and check your copy after a break. Or to print it out and read it out loud. Remember, just one grammatical mistake can ruin your credibility. Once you’ve proofread, you can post with confidence!
