Is your file really print ready?

So, you want something printed and have created your own artwork. But how do you know it is ready for print? Our design agency in Devon often receive files that aren’t printable – so how do you ensure you don’t incur artwork charges and get it right for us to print?

One of our designers, Emma, has put together a handy guide of what is required when sending your files to print.

The guide below is also available in pdf format so we can send it out to you if needed.

Our guide to ensuring your file is print ready

If we are sending your file directly to print you need to ensure you are creating and exporting it correctly for the best printing results.

  1. Ensure the file you have set up is CMYK and not RGB.
  2. Make sure all images used are around 300dpi and CMYK.
  3. Make sure you have bleed and crop marks.
We require at least 3mm bleed around each edge of your document so that there are no nasty white borders on your items (unless that’s how you want it!). If nothing is running off the edge of the pages you do not need to worry about bleed.

Trim Line

The trim line is indicated by the dashed line. This is the edge of the paper and indicates where the document will be cut once it has been printed.

Safe Zone

The safe zone is indicated by the light yellow border. We advise this should be 5mm inside the document edge. Keep all important information inside the border to ensure nothing important gets cut off.

Indicated by the Oxygen Yellow. This is the part of the document that will get cut off. To avoid white borders on your items you must ensure that all background images, colours and graphics extend beyond the trim line. We advise bleed should be at least 3mm.

Crop Marks

Crop marks enable our printers to cut the document to the correct page size.
