So most people hate Mondays, right? Well not me! In fact I look forward to Monday morning. All my life I’ve dreamt of the days where I get to work the 9-5.30 life as a Graphic Designer. And fortunately for me that dream became a reality when Oxygen took me on as graphic designer at their Taunton office back in March.
So here’s what a week in the life of a graphic designer at Oxygen is really like.
We start each day with a morning meeting. During these meetings we plan the day ahead, so we know exactly what we are doing and what the deadlines are. I started the week off with a fairly big project for a South West based energy company. They needed a whole new look but it had to keep within the brand guidelines, as they wanted to keep their logo and colours. My task was to design a number of items including a branded folder, letterhead, compliment slip and business cards.
So, during the morning tea I got brainstorming for ideas for what each item could look like. They all had to follow the same look so that they could be easily recognised as part of the same family. This project was recurrent throughout the week with tweaks to the artwork to get them perfect.
During my time at university we never really got any chances to do any sort of website design, so this was something I was looking forward to while working as a full time designer at Oxygen.
Also this week I’ve been putting the finishing touches to the design concepts on my first website project for a new company that will be facilitating horse sales. This is going to be an ongoing project due to the sheer size of the website and the amount of learning I need to do to get it perfect. I have hand-drawn some designs on paper and selected the one that works best with what the client needs and started the design of the websites homepage in Photoshop. The design seems to be complex due to the amount of content needed to make the site work how the client needs, so I have a feeling it may take a lot of time to get working from a design and development point of view. This project is ongoing but I’m loving getting back into the swing of learning.
Learning on the job, even better! I’ve also had a lot of ‘smaller’ jobs this week, such as updating a blog for a local charity, market research, editing photography for press releases, stationery design, and much more. So my week has been very busy, and of course it’s not all design.
I have to do a bit of blogging, research and telephone answering here and there but I am very proud to be a part of the Oxygen team, and always look forward to new projects small and big.
