Do you need to update your logo? Not if you're global, it seems.

Update your logo? Or carry on regardless?

You think you need to update your logo? Emma, a designer at our Devon design agency, gives her view on some well-known but old-as-the-hills logos…

“As designers we are constantly looking at the current design trends. This helps us create designs which are up-to-date and will fit in with the current market, but they must also fit in with the client’s target market. Read our blog about design trend of 2014.

Below you will see some logos of some of the biggest companies in the world that have (we think) out-dated looking logos.

Gazprom

 

Gazprom is a global company that deals with geological exploration, production, transportation, storage, processing and sales of gas etc. We think Gazprom’s logo makes the company look like a small, local organisation and not a huge worldwide gas company.

The logo lacks dynamics and design. The logo does show what the company does in the form of a flame, but the flame icon is too simple and ‘clip art’ like. The icon sort of merges in with the name of the company so it’s hard to differentiate them, the icon looks like a ‘G’ so it’s easy to read the logo as ‘GGAZPROM’.

The Gazprom logo could do with a re-fresh or a complete over-haul – call us guys!

IBM

International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) is a multinational technology and consulting corporation. IBM manufactures and markets computer hardware and software, and offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.

This logo was created in 1972 and has remained unchanged since then. IBM’s logo is very recognisable but it doesn’t tell the consumer what they do! To people who don’t know IBM, they could do anything! We thing this logo is outdated and could do with a complete re-design, but it’s not as easy as that – this logo if highly recognisable all over the world, so the new logo would need to be mind-blowing for it to be as high impact.

 The United Nations

 

Everyone know what the United Nations is, so I’ll just get on with it!

The United Nation’s logo could be improved by introducing more colour. We feel the logo is very flat and lacks impact. It’s hard to tell what it is with the circles and the map being the same colours. With a logo re-fresh this logo could be re-generated into something worth looking at.

There are endless out-of-date logos which we could show you but you wouldn’t want to read it all!
