Gone round in circles for new Twitter update?

If you are an avid Twitter user you may have noticed that it looked a little different on Friday morning last week. That’s because the popular social media site has released another update – and there are a few important changes that you should be aware of.

 

Square to Circle

The biggest change was the re-design of the profile photos. Like most of the social media sites, Twitter’s profile photos were square, but this latest update has changed them to be circular. Although this won’t have affected everyone, you may want to check that your profile image hasn’t been cut off or re-aligned.

 

Here are the updated dimensions for both the profile and header (banner) photos so you can make sure your images are up to date:

 

  • Header photo (recommended dimensions are 1500×500 pixels)
  • Profile photo (recommended dimensions are 400×400 pixels)

Live updates

Another important change to note is the live update function. It automatically updates the reply, retweet and like counters on a tweet, so you can see it happen in real time. This is an interesting feature, especially for breaking news or trending topics, as you can see the conversations taking place as they happen.

 

Intuitive icons

Twitter has also decided to change its icon for the ‘reply’ button. It was originally an arrow, but apparently some thought the icon meant to go back or to delete. To make it more intuitive, the icon has been changed to a speech bubble – a universal symbol across many social media sites, which insinuates a message or comment function.

 

Finally, Twitter has also updated its navigation menu for iOS to match the Android version, and has changed the typography and external links function. Minor changes, but developments all the same.
